It is with sadness that we announce the sudden passing of a wonderful partner, brother, step-father, step-grandfather, uncle and friend. Wayne passed away on Thursday, May 29, 2014, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, with is loving family by his side.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Larry and Frances (Gallant) Smith and was a member of St. Joseph’s Church, Reserve Mines.
Earlier in his years Wayne operated a flooring installation business and later worked in the construction trade, retiring early due to an at work injury. He was a very personable, easygoing and giving man, who enjoyed doing yard work and was the Mr. fix it for his friends and neighbours. Wayne was always outside puttering around his yard and would help anyone in need. He played softball for many years and spent numerous hours maintaining the ball field and raising money for local teams.
Wayne is survived by his loving partner Donna Stubbard; stepdaughter Cindy (Keith); stepson Kevin (Brittney); sister Diane (Don) McNeil; brothers Reginald, Frank, Joe (Joan); Wayne’s cherished step-grandchildren, who were his pride and joy, Chelsea, Kimberly, Ryan, Londyn, Ty; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Besides his parents, Wayne was also predeceased by brothers Willie, Jack, George, Manny, niece Tanya and sister-in-law Sarah.
Visitation for Wayne will be Tuesday, June 3, 2014 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. The funeral Mass officiated by Fr. Daniel Boudreau will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph’s Church, Reserve Mines, with interment following in the parish cemetery.
