Glenn A. Musgrave, age 83, of Florence, Cape Breton passed away peacefully at Harbourstone Enhanced Care Facility, Sydney on June 2, 2014.
Glenn was born in North Sydney, and was the son of the late Austin and Muriel (Johnston) Musgrave.
Glenn moved to Florence in 1953 when he married Cora Campbell, his wife of 61 years. Glenn was a past member of Branch 83 Royal Canadian Legion and served as an intricate member of the Florence Volunteer Fire Department from 1961-1987 retiring due to health reasons. He joined the fire department shortly after the founding meetings and worked tirelessly to get a hall and equipment to help grow the fledgling department to become a regional leader. Glenn served as an engine captain and trainer for many years. He particularly enjoyed training other members to effectively fight fires and operate and service the fire fighting equipment.
Glenn was a coalminer from 1953-1989 working in #3 Florence until it closed and then onto #1 Princess in Sydney Mines. He worked briefly in #26 and Lingan until the opening of the Prince Mine in Point Auconi.
Glenn loved spending time with family and friends. He was known for his easy smile, wit and willingness to help others. He was an avid camper who loved singing the old songs, telling stories, dancing, and playing cards.
He is survived by his sons, Glenn Musgrave Jr. (Pat) and Brett Musgrave (Debbie); daughter, Mona Whitehouse (Dave); grandchildren, Scott Musgrave, Blake Musgrave, Jessica Hawley, Erin Firman, Taylor Musgrave; great-grandchildren, Mark Firman and Lane Musgrave; sister, Virginia (Chook) Lewis and brother-in-law, Sandy Lewis.
He was also predeceased by his wife, Cora Musgrave (Campbell) on May 10, 2014, sister, Loraine Norman and brother-in-law, Sid Norman.
Glenn and Cora’s remains were cremated. There will be a joint celebration of their lives starting with visitation 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday, June 5 at Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home, 10 Clyde Ave., Sydney Mines. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Friday, June 6 at Wilson United Church, Florence, Rev. Nick Phillips will officiate. Interment in Brookside Cemetry, Sydney Mines. Celebration of life activities will conclude with a gathering of family and friends where stories will be exchanged and snacks and beverages will be served.
