It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of RoseMarie Margaret Matthews, Evanston, Cape Breton, after a lengthy courageous battle with cancer; at the Strait Richmond Hospital on Wednesday, June 4th, 2014. Rose passed away peacefully surrounded by her husband, Paul; children, Edward and Dèsire.
Born on March 18, 1959, she was the daughter of Mrs. Catherine Hughes (Doudelet) and the late Cedric Hughes.
She is survived by her loving husband of 35 years, Paul; son, Edward and daughter, Dèsire; granddaughters, Sierra and Isabella. Rose is also survived by sisters, Eva (Gregor) Hattie, Joanne (Wayne) Reynolds, Nadine (Paul Clark) Hughes, Jean (Walter) Doué, Ellen and brother, Cedric Jr. (Alice); mother-in-law, Mrs. Shirley Matthews,; sister-in-law, Bonni (Tom) Matthews-Hawboldt and many nieces and nephews.
A 1978 accounting graduate of Dartmouth Regional Vocational School, Rose worked various technical positions with many companies over the years; lastly being with Zurich Canada for 15 years.
The world is a better place for having Rose and she will be sadly missed by her many friends from her early years in Thorburn, Port Hastings, and later in Dartmouth, Oakville and then Evanston. Rose is loved by all who know her.
Living in her dream home the last few years in Evanston, her greatest joy was having her grandkids down for the summer and having large gatherings with family and friends. Spring being her favourite season, she loved to watch the trees and flowers come to life.
We would like to thank the palliative care doctors and nurses, continuing care and Strait Richmond Hospital doctors and nurses for their compassion and support during Rose’s stay at home and eventual passing at the Strait Richmond. Resting in Green’s Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury with visitation on Monday from 6-8 pm. Funeral Mass will be offered Tuesday, June 10, 2014 at 2 p.m. from St. Francis de Sales Roman Catholic Church, Lower River inhabitatnts; burial to follow in the parish cemetery, A reception will follow the burial in the Riverdale Community Hall.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, or the Strait Richmond Hospital.
Funeral arrangments are under the direction of Green’s Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury.
