George Edward Cade was born in Red Deer, Alberta, on September 2, 1922, to John and Margaret Alice Cade and was the youngest of eight children.
Ted, as he was called, lived on the farm in Red Deer, AB, and attended the Horn Hill School until 1930 when his father, John Cade, moved the family to a new homestead in Pouce Coupe, because he was tired of the prairie and missed the forest. Ted was eight years old when he and most of the family arrived in Hythe by train and then travelled the rest of the way by horse and wagon.
Ted then attended High Ridge School along with his sister, Ruby. After leaving school he worked on the family farm with his father and brothers. In the 40’s he and his brother cut and hauled trees and, using a horse team, hauled them to their sawmill, where they cut railroad ties to sell to the railroad. During the Second World War his father refused to let Ted go along with his brothers, Bill and Tom, as he needed him at home to help on the farm.
Ted worked at many different jobs including: a concrete plant, cutting and hauling ice blocks, clearing land, harvesting, and he even cut and installed some of the telephone poles that are still along Arndt Road today. He also worked for a long time at the Bennett Dam project during its construction. He went on to work on the bridge crew for the Department of Highways, until his retirement, as well as running the family farm.
March 7, 1966 he married Bertha Tremblay also of Pouce Coupe. They eloped to McLennan to get married with Ted’s sister Mae and husband Bill as their witnesses.
Ted and Bertha had four children Myla, Bill, Lisa and Leo.
In the mid 80’s he retired, but that did not slow him down. He enjoyed gardening, working in the greenhouse, and around the yard and farm. Almost every spruce tree on the farm today was planted by Ted, along with numerous apple, birch and oak trees.
Ted and Bertha proudly attended the weddings of Bill to Sylvie Leduc, Leo to Loralie Schneider, and a few years later Ted walked Lisa down the aisle when she married Grant Price. He had four grand daughters which he was very proud of Jackie, Kristen, Emily and Julie and two days ago became a great grandpa to new baby, Bronson. Unfortunately in 2001 he lost his best friend when his wife Bertha passed away.
He enjoyed music from artists such as Hank Snow and Marty Robby, and he enjoyed sports, but he particularly enjoyed baseball and was a big fan of the Toronto Blue Jays.
He was a quiet man, but he had a great sense of humor and was quite artistic and loved to draw animals and scenery portraits. Unfortunately, most did not end up on paper. He was always sketching wonderful drawings of moose, horses, cats, and dogs on the kitchen table.
Ted is fondly remembered by his children, Myla, Bill, Lisa (Grant), and Leo; his grandchildren, Jackie (Aaron), Kristen (Kyle), Emily, and Julie; great grandchild, Bronson; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cherished family and friends.
A memorial service was held on Thursday, May 29th 2014 at the Bergeron Funeral Chapel, officiated by Reverend Marilyn Carroll. Inurnment will follow at a later date at the Riverview Cemetery in Pouce Coupe, British Columbia.
