It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Catherine 'Kay' Magdy, on Wednesday, June 18, 2014, in Strait Richmond Hospital, Evanston following a brief illness.
Born in Sydney Mines, on May 25, 1929, she was a daughter of the late Donald John 'Daniel' and Marcella (MacLean) O'Handley. She and her husband Wally owned and operated Kay’s Variety Store, Hay Cove from 1971 until their retirement in 1995. Prior to moving back to Cape Breton, they lived in both Georgetown, Ont. and Toronto, Ont., where she worked at Canada Life Insurance for many years. As member of the Sacred Heart Parish Church, Johnstown, she was also a long time member of the Sacred Heart Parish CWL. She loved to help her community with fundraising efforts through her membership in the District 10 Fire Dept. Ladies Auxiliary and the Johnstown Seniors Club. Her love of watching the Blue Jays was almost as strong as her love of bingo, which she rarely missed.
Left to mourn her loss are her husband Walter 'Wally', just short of their 60th wedding anniversary on July 3; sons, John (Rose), Mississauga, Ont.; Terry (Cynthia), Hammond’s Plains; Scott (Rose), Hay Cove; daughter, Marcie Bungay (Drew), North Sydney; grandchildren, Katelin, Deidre and Kirsti, Clare, Ryan and Nathan (Emma), Keely and Adam; great-granddaughter, Lila; her brother, Allan (Judy); sisters, Margie Speirs and Frances MacDonald; sisters-in-law, Marie O'Handley and Isabel O'Handley, as well as a large number of loving nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by sisters, Maya (in childhood), Reynelda, and Louise; brothers, Harry and Donald; brothers-in-law, Charles Bowen, James Dillon, Robert Speirs, Garfield MacLean and Joe MacDonald.
In keeping with Kay's wishes, cremation has taken place. The family will receive visitors Sunday, June 22, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, 26 Centennial St., St. Peter’s. Funeral mass will be held in Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, Johnstown, on Monday, 11 a.m. with Rev. M. Joseph Gillis officiating. Interment to follow in the parish cemetery. Family flowers only please. Memorial donations may be made to the Strait Richmond Palliative Care Society or charity of choice.
