Jean King
KING, Jean – 94, Central Onslow. It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, grandmother and great grandmother, Jean King, on Tuesday, June 24, 2014. The passing occurred quietly at the Colchester East Hants Health Centre with her children by her side. Born in Onslow Mountain in 1919, she was a daughter of the late Charlton and Mary (Minnie) Crowe. Jean attended Onslow Mountain School, Colchester Academy and Provincial Normal College. She went on to teach in Avondale and Clarksville, Hants County, Onslow Mountain and Central Onslow. She was a very active member of Trinity United Church, Central Onslow, leading mission band, taught Sunday school and served as Sunday school superintendent. She was an elder in her church and member of many church committees as well as a long-time member of the church choir. She was instrumental in the founding of the United Church Women at the national level. A life member of the Friendship Unit of the UCW, she acted as secretary for many years. One of her greatest personal accomplishments was to serve as president of the Truro UCW Presbyterial for two years having made many dear friends along the way. She was active in Home and School both at the local and provincial levels. Mother loved to travel and, with husband Carl, was ready for an excursion around the province or across the country at any time. She happily visited family in the UK and Africa when the occasion arose. She is survived by her children, Gloria Smith, Central Onslow; Carman and Louise King, Halifax; grandchildren, Tracy Smith Crosby (Mike), Central Onslow; Kirby Smith, Central Onslow; Melissa King (Jonathon), Harrietsfield; Gavin King, Halifax; great grandchildren, Brianna and Emily Crosby, Central Onslow; Emmett Andrews, Harrietsfield; several nieces and nephews. Along with her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Carl; brothers, sisters, three sisters in infancy; son-in-law, Jamie Smith; great granddaughter, Alyssa Jean Crosby. Family and friends were her greatest joy! Family flowers only. If so desired, donations in Mother’s memory may be made to Trinity United Church, MS Society or Canadian Cancer Society. Arrangements have been entrusted to Mattatall – Varner Funeral Home , 55 Young Street, Truro, where Jean’s family will receive friends from 2-4, 7-9 p.m., today, June 26, 2014. Funeral service will be held 2 p.m., Friday, June 27, 2014, in Trinity United Church, 415 Onslow Road, Upper Onslow, Reverend Glenn MacLean officiating. Interment in Onslow Island Cemetery.
