Irene Smith

SMITH, IRENE ELIZABETH - It is with heavy hearts that the family of Irene Smith of Eel River Crossing announces her death at her daughter's home on July 16 at the age of 75. Born in Dalhousie, NB, on January 28th, 1939, she was the wife of the late Douglas Smith. Irene leaves behind her son, Brian Smith (Geri); daughters, Sandra Smith (Russ) and Brenda MacAlpine (Eric); grandchildren, Julia, Dylan and Shelby; brothers, Alfred and Ralph McIntyre; sisters, Adeline Main and Georgette Baker; sister in law, Donna McIntyre; special nieces, Sheila, Wanda and Brenda; friend, Patsy, who provided incredible support during her final journey as well as a large extended family and cherished friends for whom she had great love and admiration. In addition to her husband, Doug, Irene was predeceased by her parents, George and Mary Alice "Florentine" McIntyre and brothers, Wilfred and Gerald. Irene was a woman of great compassion and warmth always ready to offer sage advice to see a person through a rough time. Her smile and kindness were known by many. She adored her family and friends and had a deep sense of commitment towards them. If a friend or loved one had a burden on his or her shoulders, she would help carry the weight by listening and helping to her greatest capacity. Traveling and the joys associated with learning about new people and places excited her, especially the sampling of their foods. She loved being outdoors, watching wildlife, kayaking through a quiet cove smelling the cedar scented, fresh air and shopping with her friends and family. Her sense of humor could brighten the dreariest of days for anyone near her. She had a deep sense of civic duty and enjoyed fundraising for the Cancer Society and Team Canada Healing Hands for Haiti. She will live on in the memories of those who knew her and loved her.
There will be no visitation at her request. A memorial mass will be celebrated at St. John Bosco Catholic Church Monday, July 21st, 2014 at 11am with Fr. Frenette as celebrant. In lieu of flowers, donations to Team Canada Healing Hands (www.tcch.org), The Mgr. Henri-Cormier Lodge in Moncton, or The Extra Mural Program in Fredericton would be appreciated by the family. McAdam’s Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements. Online condolences can be made at www.mcadamsfh.com, (506) 458-9170.
