
MARY JULIA (SMITH) HAMPTON
Hampton, Mary Julia (Smith), Lower Onslow passed away in the early hours of July 19th in the Colchester East Hants Health Centre. Born in Eureka, Pictou County on June 3rd, 1930 she was the youngest daughter of the late Perl and Sadie (Hayman) Smith. Mary moved to Stellarton where she met and married the love of her life, Fred. In 1958 they moved to Bible Hill where she became a lifetime member of St. David's UCW and enjoyed singing in the choir. She was a Cub leader as well as an active member of St. John's Ambulance. A further move with her family in 1964 saw Mary become a busy member of the Margaret Jean Lacey UCW group and the choir of the Onslow United Church. In 2010 she retired from singing with 66 years as a member of various choirs. Her married life revolved around her husband, Fred and her two boys, Freddy and Stanley and in later years her two grandchildren, Shane and Amanda and their families. For 37 years Mary enjoyed their summers at the cottage in Marshville where many a weekend was passed entertaining family and friends. For 18 years she and Fred traveled to St. Petersburg, Florida where they spent the winters making numerous friends from across the country. Throughout her life Mary derived great pleasure working with her hands as she sewed, crocheted, knitted and quilted, as well as did petite-point, cross-stitch and a wide variety of handcrafts. Mary is survived by Fred, her husband of nearly 64 years; her sons, Fred Jr. (Diane), Salt Springs, and Stanley (Shirley), Onslow; her grandchildren, Shane (Katy), Pictou, and Amanda (Matt), Lower Sackville; her dearly – loved great grandboys,Will, Finley, Sam and Cooper. She is also survived by her sister, Flo Ives, Stellarton; sister-in-law, Rachel Smith, Sydney Mines; and many nieces and nephews. Mary was predeceased by her dad, Perl Smith; mom, Sadie Chisholm; step-dad, Robert Chisholm; brothers, Clarence, Richard, Stanley and Robert; sister, Patricia; and special niece, Pearl (Ives) MacMillan. Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation. A service of Remembrance will be held on Wednesday, July 23rd at 2:00p.m. in Trinity United Church, Onslow with Rev. Glenn MacLean officiating; a reception to follow. Interment will be in Onslow Island Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mary's memory may be made to the Diabetic Association, Heart and Stroke Foundation or Trinity United Church.
