It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our brother, uncle, teacher and friend John “J.J.” MacNeil, age 65, a resident of Sydney Mines, on Thursday, July 24, 2014, at the Northside General Hospital, North Sydney.
Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late Stephen and Rita (MacLean) MacNeil.
John was a well known teacher, having taught at various schools in the Cape Breton District School Board, such as Baddeck High and T. L. Sullivan in Florence.
After he retired John returned to teach at Unama’ki Training & Education Centre in Eskasoni. John was the Mi’kmaw Kina’matnewey’s representative at the Department of Education for senior high assessments. He also served as the literacy lead for TEC at Mi’kmaw Kina’matnewey. He enjoyed spending time with his family, getting together for holidays and special occasions.
He is survived by his sister Mary (Frank) MacInnis, London, Ont., his two nephews Shawn (Stacey) & Jason (Deb), his special cousin Ann Marie MacDonald, his nieces and nephews Darlene (Gerard), Beverly, Karen, Daniel (Frances), Jeanette (Paul), Gerald, Kevin and Jocelyn.
Besides his parents John was predeceased by his half-brother Buddy MacNeil, his half-sisters Kaye MacNeil & Marie MacLean.
Visitation for John will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Monday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney. Funeral Mass will be held at 11a.m. on Tuesday at St. Joseph Church, North Sydney with Rev. Patrick O’Neill officiating. Cremation to follow and burial will take place at Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks, at a later date.
Memorial donations may be made to the J.J. MacNeil Memorial Scholarship through the Eskasoni School Board.
