With deep sorrow and broken hearts, we, the family of Ryan Gillis, announce his sudden passing on Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2014, as the result of a motor vehicle accident in Alberta.
Born in Sydney Mines on May 1, 1984, he was the son of Bernard Gillis and Eileen Butts-Robinson.
Ryan touched so many lives in such a short period of time. He is our hero, our guardian and our inspiration.
He leaves behind his special girl Aiiyisha Simai; Ma, Eileen (nee) Butts-Robinson (Brian), Corey and William; his Da, Bernie Gillis (Gerrie MacDonald); brothers, Jeff (Suzie), Liam, Steven (Sam), Chris MacDonald (Candace); sisters, Ashley MacDonald, Brittany Renee (Kevin). Also left to mourn are uncles, Roderick Gillis Jr., Robert Joseph (Bobby Joe) Gillis, Basil Butts; aunts, Vera MacGillivary, Aldric LeBlanc, Belinda Gillis, Helen Kelley, Mary Theresa Shepherd, Janice MacNeil, Anne MacEachern, Louise Butts; nephews, Cole (Jeff), Jeremy (Steven), Finley and Braydon (Chris), Brayden and Isaac (Brittany); nieces, Molly, Marci (godchild) and Malia (Jeff), numerous cousins (Gillis and Butts) and many, many friends, here and gone.
Ryan was predeceased by his paternal grandparents, Roderick Gillis Sr. and Veronica Gillis; uncles, William Gillis Sr., Lawrence Gillis, and cousin, Roderick Gillis 3rd; his maternal grandparents, William Joseph Butts and Veronica Francis Butts and uncle, William Gregory Butts; and dear friends Zachary Marsh (Leroy), Drew Campbell, and many more.
To all extended families Ryan has touched on both sides, as well as his N.A. Family, his Yoga family, union brothers and sisters, and all worldwide, who supported Ryan in good times and bad, thank you. Special thanks to DJ Paquet, loving brother and friend, and Dave Sudworth, close friend and roommate. Thank you also to friend Jason LeFrense, for helping Ryan’s voice and story be heard.

Visitation for Ryan Gillis will be held on Monday, Aug. 25, 2014, in J. M. Jobes Funeral Home, 635 Main St., Sydney Mines, from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. A celebration of his life will take place Tuesday at 10 a.m. in Holy Family Church (formerly St. Pius X) with Fr. Paul Abbass officiating. The burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Bras d’Or.
