Marianne Louise Jewell

Marianne Louise Jewell

Lieu de naissance : Milwaukee
Date de naissance : 3 décembre 1948

Date de décès : 20 septembre 2014

Age 65, of North Lake Ainslie, died peacefully on Sept. 20, 2014, at Inverness Consolidated Memorial Hospital. Cremation has taken place.
Marianne leaves behind the family she loved, her daughter, Nicole Evers and granddaughter, Maya, Washington, D.C.; her brother, Brian Jewell (Nasrin), Minneapolis; her sister, Sharon Jewell (Mark Pennucci), Seattle; as well as her aunts, cousins, and many friends and students.
Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on Dec. 3, 1948, Marianne was the first child of the late Lee and Margaret (Johnson) Jewell.
She studied piano and violin while growing up in Wisconsin. Later, she lived with her daughter, Nicole in the Seattle, Washington area. After Nicole left for college, Marianne enrolled at Evergreen State College herself. She did her senior thesis on the Gaelic music and culture of Cape Breton Island, spending months in Cape Breton doing research, and graduated with a degree in ethnomusicology. Then she moved to Cape Breton permanently, joined St. Mary’s parish in Mabou, and became a Canadian citizen. Her mission was to introduce young students to the joys of music through the fiddle and piano lessons she gave. Many of her students have become excellent musicians, some going on to careers in music. Marianne also worked as a proofreader for the Inverness Oran and did office work for St. Mary’s. She was the piano accompanist for the Inverness County Singers, played often at local concerts and benefits, played the organ at mass, and accompanied fiddlers on the Rounder Records anthology “Mabou Coal Mines” and on Mary Jane Lamond’s recording “Orain Ghàidhlig.” Marianne’s strong faith and belief in the power of prayer helped her through her recent illness. She enjoyed a good meal and a nice glass of red wine. Her dog Calum kept her entertained and got her out walking. She appreciated dry wit and anyone who could make her laugh.
Visitation will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 26 in the vestry of St. Mary’s Church, with funeral mass at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 27, in St. Mary’s Church, with Fr. Angus Morris officiating. All are invited to a lunch at the Mabou Hall following the service, where there will be an open mike for any of Marianne’s current or former students to perform.
Donations in Marianne’s name may be made to the Central Inverness Palliative Care Society or to a charity of your choice.
