DAVIS, Victor Gullison- age 89, born October 15, 1924 at Rockville, Yarmouth Co, N.S. passed away at Nakile Home for Special Care on September 23, 2014. Son of the late Sgt. Herbert L Davis and Glady’s (Churchill) Davis of Brooklyn, Yarmouth Co., N.S. He attended grade school at Chebogue Point and graduated from night school at the former Vocational School on Parade St in carpentry and cooking. Victor spent time as cook at Resolution Bay Island and Cape Hope. Victor also worked at Fort Mackenzie for the Department of Transport and also was employed on the local police force by the Town of Yarmouth. He married Lena Crowell of Kemptville and moved to the United States of America in 1955 and worked for Stop and Shop Retailers as a transport driver travelling to New York, Maine and New England States. He was a member of the local 25 Teamsters Union, Boston Mass, and Independent Odd Fellows. In June 1943 at Quebec he joined the ship M.B. McLean, an icebreaker taken over by the Merchant Navy to service radio stations in the Northern Arctic., South Hampton Island, Cape Dorset, Salisbury Island, Cape Hope Advance, Resolution Island, Coates and Masel Island, Cape Wilson, Prince Charles, Iqaluit, and numerous others. He picked up supplies in Churchill Manitoba to supply other stations. In 1944 he and two Eskimos went by boat to pick up mail at Resolution Island twenty miles away. A secret Air force base was built there unknown to the people of the island by the United States of America Air Force. Before arriving at the base a sudden storm caught them by surprise, they couldn’t find the inlet to the base so they turned the boat around and tied up in a cove to weather the storm. They stayed there for 3 days and fought the weather. On the fourth day the weather broke and they went back to home base. Two days later they went by dog team with two Eskimos at Resolution Island. However, it was late in the evening and the weather took a turn for the worst being extremely cold with strong winds and blinding snow. The Eskimos made an igloo, while he remained with the dog team. They stayed overnight in the igloo. The next day they awoke to find the weather was clear and only then did they discover that they were only half a mile from the base! It was there he met the late Howard Thompson Sr. of Yarmouth, a cook at the base. He returned to his base on the third day. He would take several trips with the Eskimos and dog team, hunting and fishing the last trips to Cape Hope Advance to pick up mail at the Chimo. On January 1945 he was sent to Robertsville Quebec to pick up a two seat ski plane, upon arrival he was taken by horse and sleigh for an overnight at the Robertsville Hotel. On September 1945 he went via Fort Mackenzie to return home. Throughout his life he built and renovated many homes and was most happy when a hammer was in his hands.
