John 'Obbie' Mitchell

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of John Albert 'Obbie' Mitchell on Oct. 31, 2014, surrounded by loving family members at the Palliative Care unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
The son of the late Murray and Annie (Payne) Mitchell of River Ryan, Obbie was predeceased by his 11 siblings and son, Colin.
He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Mary (Pace), son Ian and son-in-law Allan Penning.
A life-long passion for automobiles led Obbie to a long career as a car salesman in Sydney. Though he worked at several GM dealerships, his honesty, integrity and friendly outgoing manner helped him maintain a strong and loyal customer base.
Possessed of a strong sense of community, he was actively involved in many organizations for most of his adult life, including the Masonic Lodge, the Riverview Y's Men and the Golden K Club.
Through his love of politics he became a tireless worker on behalf of the federal and provincial PC Parties. Over the years he held numerous positions and was recently named as an honourary president of the Nova Scotia PC Party.
Obbie was a devoted and caring husband, father, father-in-law, brother, cousin, uncle, great uncle and good friend to many. He will be greatly missed by all.
Visitations will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 4 from 2 to 4 pm and 7-9 p.m. at S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney. Funeral service will take place on Wednesday, Nov. 5 at 2 p.m. at the United Protestant Church on Kings Road in Sydney River.
His family wish to extend a special thank you to the kind and competent staff at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, particularly those in Unit 4C and the Palliative Care Unit. We would also like to thank the staff of Harbourstone Extended Care for their compassion.
