(June 15, 1928 - November 4, 2014) Died peacefully and entered into Eternity on Tuesday, November 4th in St. John's, at the age of 86. He is predeceased by his parents, Joseph Michael Greene and Marie Eugenie Greene (née Williams), of St. John's. Jim is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Cherry Anne (née Midwood), along with eight children and twelve grandchildren: Michael (Marilyn Dodge) with Melanie, of St. John's, and Juliana (Dominic Pierri) of Port Moody, BC; Marie-Louise with Wesley Holmes, of St. John's; Bernard (Joanne Faour) of St. John's, with Dominic and Danielle, studying in Toronto, ON; Joseph of St. John's; Elizabeth (Ronald Whitten) with Victoria, Kent and Maria, of St. John's; James (Lori Sullivan) with Katherine and Graham, of Ottawa, ON; Randal (Sharon Ormiston) of St. John's; and Jennifer (Patrick Bavis) with Peter and Henry, of Paradise, NL. Also remembering him fondly are brother-in-law James Midwood (Tessa Robertson) of Lechlade-on-Thames, England, with Mark, Claire, Stephen and Frances. The family expresses special thanks to Dr. Patrick O'Shea, Jim's caregiver Tracey Whittle, the 4th floor staff at Tiffany Village, together with Dr. Terry McPherson and the staff of the CCU and 5SA coronary unit and Fr. Francis Roche and the pastoral team, at the Health Sciences Centre. Jim was born in St. John's and graduated from St. Bonaventure's College in 1945. After earning degrees in English at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana, he was elected the Rhodes Scholar for Newfoundland in 1949 and studied law at Merton College, Oxford. He and Cherry were married at Hamstead, England in 1953 and moved to St. John's. He practiced law over a 47-year career, for many years in partnership with the late Hon. Fabian O'Dea, Q.C. and the late Edward A. Neary, Q.C. and retired in April 2000. He was a member of the Board of Directors of Churchill Falls (Labrador) Corporation, Fisheries Products International Ltd. and other corporations. He served as the MHA for St. John's East and was Leader of the Opposition for the Progressive Conservative Party (1959-1966). Jim was active in community affairs and held positions with various organizations including the Catholic Education Committee, the Catholic Education Council, the Memorial University Board of Regents, the Red Cross Blood Procurement Committee, the Duke of Edinburgh's Award in Canada, the Kiwanis Music Festival, the Kiwanis Club of St. John's and the Newfoundland Board of Trade. He spent many enjoyable summers with family and friends at "Sunny Slope" on Topsail Pond. Thanks to God's grace and with his usual humour, he was able to say, as they do in cricket, "I've had a good long inning". The family will be receiving friends at Caul's Funeral Home, 84 LeMarchant Road on Thursday and Friday, November 6th and 7th, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the Basilica of St. John the Baptist on Saturday, November 8th, at 9:30 a.m. Inurnment at Belvedere Cemetery will follow at a later date.
