It is with great sadness we announce the sudden passing of Donald MacLean Nicholson at his home in Middle River, Victoria County.
Born in West Side Middle River, he was the son of the late Johnny Sam and Mary (MacDonald) Nicholson.
Donald had a full and active life. He attended school in Middle River, Baddeck and Sydney Academy, followed by Truro Agricultural College, graduating in 1952, then he went on to graduate from MacDonald College at McGill University in 1956.
He enjoyed varied careers which took him across Canada and back home again. First with the Federal Department of Agriculture, starting as a livestock field man in 1956 and finishing as regional director for Food Production & Inspection for the province of Ontario. His next career began with his retirement from the Department of Agriculture in 1986 when he and his wife moved back to Cape Breton and started a hobby farm in his family community of Middle River. He then added fireman to his resume as a volunteer fireman in Middle River and his much cherished time as fire chief.
Donald was a Mason belonging to St. Marks Lodge, Baddeck, #35. He was active in his community volunteering his time with many groups including but not limited to the Middle River Recreational Association, service with the United Church as a Stewart and on various church committees and active member and past president of the Middle River Historical Society.
He was an avid sportsman, first as a participant in many sports, moving on to coaching and always as a fan.
He leaves behind his loving his wife of 56 years, Marie; children, Donna, Colin and Gordon (Brenda); five grandchildren, a great-grandson; his sister Shirley; brothers, Allan (Mabel), Alec (Anna) and Ray (Lois); many nieces and nephews along with a large extended family and many friends.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his sister Barbara, brothers, John and Irvine, brother-in-law Wayne and nephew Terrance.
There will be no visitation. A Masonic Service and Celebration of Donald's life will be held at the Middle River Farquarson Presbyterian Church on Sunday, Nov. 9, 2014, at 2 p.m. followed by interment at the local cemetery and a reception at the Middle River Community Hall.
Family flowers only. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Middle River United Church or the Middle River Historical Society.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Sunset Funeral co-operative, Margaree Valley.
