With heavy hearts and great sorrow, we announce the passing of our dear mother, Mary Elizabeth (Gloade) Francis, on Nov. 5, 2014, surrounded by her family and dear friends, in the palliative care unit of Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Truro, to the late Noel A. and Mary Anne (Paul) Gloade on June 23, 1928.
Mary’s mother passed away when she was 3 years old and her dad moved to the United States for work, she was raised by family members, Stephen and Sarah Paul in Truro.
After her marriage, she moved to Eskasoni in the early 40s. She was a member of Holy Family parish. She was a stay at home wife and mother, known as the community’s gramma. She always had enough to feed all that came in her home. Her door was always open, if someone needed a place to stay. Devoted to her catholic religion, she prayed daily. She lead the Blue Army Prayer House for many years.
She is survived by a large family of nine children, Marion Denny (Fred Googoo); Margie (Alex) Marshall; Sandra Denny (Ken Tobin); Jeanette (Martin) Francis; sons, Gerald R. (Mabel); Paul K. (Bern); Barry (Erika); Charles Jr. Blair (Carol), one brother; William Gloade of Connecticut, sister, Evelynn Levique of Maine; also by 128 grandchildren, 113 great-grandchildren and by 21 great-great-grandchildren. Special sisters, Geno Knockwod and Clara Gloade.
She was predeceased by her husband, former Chief Charles A. Francis; daughters, Shirley Anne Googoo, Carol Anne Battiste and Lena Francis; son, Dennis G.; sister, Jeanette Perrigun; brother, Dennis L. Gloade.
Visitation will begin after 7 p.m, on Tuesday, Nov. 11 at Gabriel Centre, Eskasoni. Funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m, on Thursday, Nov. 13 at Holy Family Church, Eskasoni, with Rev. Martin MacDougall officiating. Interment in parish cemetery.
