It is with great sorrow, that we announce the sudden passing of a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. Mary passed away with her loving family at her side, Nov. 9, 2014, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Glace Bay, Oct. 6, 1934, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Effie Mae (Penny) Hillier and was a member of Holy Cross Church, Glace Bay.
Mary was employed at Seaview Manor as a PCW, retiring after 10 years of service. She was a very kind and generous person who gave freely of herself, always putting the needs of other before those of her own. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, tending to her flower gardens, baking and her evening bingo game. Mary was a very friendly person and had a great sense of humour. She also enjoyed parties and get-togethers with her family and friends where she often entertained them playing her accordion. She may also be remembered by many for her frequent afternoon visits to her husband Bill’s business on Lower Main Street Mitchell’s Sharpening and Small Engine Repair.
Mary will be remembered by all as a great family person; she truly enjoyed caring for her husband, her children and she seized every opportunity to care for and to spend time with her grandchildren.
Mary will be sadly missed by her loving husband of 62 years, William 'Bill'; daughter Effie (Ed) Royal and their children Katie and Daniel, all of Glace bay; son Bill and his children Bill and Mark; son Richard (Theresa) and their children Sarah and Adam, all of Ontario; son Bob (Margaret) and their children Colin, Justin, and Leanne, all of Glace Bay; sister Catherine Coleman, Ontario; five great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and friends.
Besides her parents, she was also predeceased by brothers Hayward, Ernest, Richard, Albert and two brothers in infancy.
