It is with deep sadness the family announce the passing of Howard John 'Howie' (Pops) Allen, 70, on Saturday, Nov. 15, 2014, at his home surrounded by his loving family.
Born in North Sydney on June 5, 1944, he was the son of the late Corson 'Shar' and Barbara (Curtis) Allen.
In his earlier years Howie was employed with the Finance Department for Town of North Sydney, was a bus driver for the Allen Bus Company and then later became an auditor for the Provincial Tax Commission until his retirement. After his retirement he became actively involved in the family business, the Clansman Motel.
Howie was a member of the Canadian Armed Forces Militia, 2nd Nova Scotia Highlanders, Victoria Park, Sydney, where over the years he worked his way up to the rank of Lt. Colonel.
He was a founding member of the Caper Riders Motorcycle Club and in recent years also a member of the Sydney Chapter #20 of the Defenders Motorcycle Club. He was also a member of the board of directors for the Northside Community Guest Home and honorary lifetime member of the Northern Yacht Club. Howie had many other interests including travel, bowling, skiing, skating, relaxing at Black Rock and spending time with his family.
He was an active member of St. Matthew Wesley United Church, North Sydney.
Howie’s friendly and outgoing personality left an impression and touched the many people he met throughout his life. He lived a very fulfilling life and will be greatly missed by his family and many friends.
Howie is survived by his loving wife and soulmate Judy (Weatherbee) Allen; his daughters, Kelli (Derrick) Matthews, Cindi (Gilbert) Egamino, Nicki (Sheldon) Marsh and Lisa (Aaron) MacDonald; his stepchildren, Nicole (Sandy) Clannon and Daniel (Stacey) Randall; his sister Lois (John); his brother Curtis (Donna); his grandchildren, Morgan, Ryan, Elena, Ava, Ainsley, Brett, Eric, Nena, Myles, Mitchell and Ethan. Also surviving are his nephews, Everett and Stephen and niece Jennifer; his mother-in-law Rita Weatherbee; his uncle Emerson (Christine) Allen; his ex-wife and lifetime friend Jean Forsey and his faithful pups who were by his side to the end Zoe, Molly, Hobo and Buffy.
Besides his parents, Howie was predeceased by his father-in-law Trueman Weatherbee and Sheila (Basker) Clarke (mother of daughter Lisa).
Visitation for Howie will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Matthew Wesley United Church with Rev. Ritchie Robinson officiating. Burial will follow in Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Northside Community Guest Home Foundation or Taigh Solas Resident Council at the Northside General Hospital.
