Great grandchildren Meghan, Sunara Katlyn, Nolan Izabel Best friend Edward Blackler who was always there for him. Dad was an employee of Newfoundland Light & Power 1954-1975 first as a lines man and later as a meter reader a roll he relished for all the people he met and friends he made. Many a day he came home with all sorts of oddities - much to our delight and (mom's chagrin) plums, apples, fish, moose, rabbits, (a dog), sweets of all kinds at Christmas from the generous folks along the Avalon. Upon retirement dad and mom purchased a business in Witless Bay (1975-84) which they expanded to include a fish and chips take-out (Maher's Grocery & Take-out) A generation of kids grew up between our place and Lar Smiths (Maher's & Lars) From these amazing experiences mom and dad gained almost cult status on the shore as surrogate parents to many. (It has been said that Jose Maher was the "best boss ever" in the take-out business on the shore) Through their mercantile adventure they interacted with and experienced some unique moments from the Moose hunters from "out the road" who wanted to pawn their guns to get some more beer (defeating the purpose) to the group of soon to be famous young starving hippie's called Figgy Duff who were playing a gig at Witless Bay hall, mom had the obligatory pot of pea soup and dumplings on the stove - on a Saturday afternoon, much to their delight, just another day at our house. Our fridge was always full of cold beer for the locals. They then moved to Nova Scotia and later on to Ontario to try new experiences and meet new people, of which they did in abundance. Through the relationships of their kids they had the opportunity to travel to the US and Mexico, where they fitted in very well and welcomed the extended families back home for a real Newfoundland time, language not being an impediment. Finally having fulfilled their wanderlust in 1995 Jose and Edna moved back to the place closest to their hearts, Newfoundland, renovated our grandparents old house and after a few years build their dream home, which was a long time coming. Through it all they remained a team, not perfect many ups and downs but lasting...R.I.P. Jose Maher...Resting at Cauls Funeral home 84 LeMarchant Rd. Visitation Saturday November 21st, Sunday 22nd.
