February 26, 1984 – November 17, 2014
After a long battle with cancer, Shannon Lea McNeil (nee Fraser) passed away peacefully in Calgary on November 17th.
Shannon grew up in Eden Lake where at a young age she enjoyed baseball, swimming, hockey and campfires. She started playing hockey in Thorburn and went on to play Bantam hockey with the Pictou County girls team. Shannon went to Camp Geddie as a camper, and spent a summer working there as well. While still living at home she became a member of the Blue Mountain Fire Dept. as well as a First Responder.
Her love for outdoor sports continued when she moved to Calgary and she played softball in the summer and hockey in the winter. Summers in Calgary were filled with camping trips with friends and many road trips to the mountains. Each visit home she would spend as much time as possible at the lake enjoying the water with her family and her adorable nieces and nephews. There was always a campfire with s’mores to finish off the day.
Shannon started school at East River St. Mary’s and then continued at Thorburn Consolidated and East Pictou Rural High. She received her Bachelor of Education from St. Francis Xavier University. Shannon had known since she was in grade primary that she would be an elementary physical education teacher and loved her work at Sacred Heart Academy in Strathmore, Alberta. She inspired her students to be the best, no matter what their ability.
Shannon is survived by her loving husband Daniel, her parents Jackie and Brenda Fraser (Eden Lake) and her siblings: Kim (John) Webster (Stellarton), Andy (Jill) Fraser (Trenton), Zane Fraser (Natasha Gerrior) (Thorburn). She was adored by her sweet nieces and nephews: Violet and Flynn, Harper, Carly and Willow and Dawson. She will be dearly missed by maternal grandparents Violet and Palmer MacLellan (New Glasgow) and paternal grandmother Vinie Fraser (Thorburn) as well as Aunts and Uncles: Wayne Fraser, Jimmie and Nancy Fraser, Marlene MacLellan, Stephen MacLellan and Kevin MacLellan. Shannon will also be missed by her many cousins.
Shannon was predeceased by her grandfather Douglas Fraser and her aunt Margie Fraser.
Visitation will be held at the H.W. Angus Funeral Home in New Glasgow on Saturday, November 29th from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. Funeral will be held at Knox Presbyterian Church, Blue Mtn. on Sunday, November 30th at 2 p.m. Reception to follow at the Blue Mtn. Fire Hall.
Donations in memory of Shannon may be made to Blair Presbyterian Church, Garden of Eden or the Canadian Cancer Society.
