It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Clarence Joseph Burke, 80, of Sydney at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Nov. 28, 2014, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late James and Sarah Burke (MacNeil).
He was a member of Branch 12 Legion. Clarence was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was an avid Toronto Maple Leaf and Blue Jay fan and favourite times were spent in Ontario, where he enjoyed watching them play. Clarence loved getting together for family gatherings and a game of pass the ace. Driving the scenic routes of Cape Breton and any place the road may take him and his loving wife of 61 years, was another love. One of his favourite trips was the Gold Train through the Rockie Mountains from Banff to Vancouver, a longtime dream.
Clarence was most proud of his children and families which came first above all. He was a burner service mechanic who owned and operated Burke's Burner Service Ltd. for over 28 years until his retirement.
Clarence is survived by his wife Helen (Mackillop)Burke; sons, Allan (Bernedette), Dougie (Wendy) and daughter Kathy (Danny) Halloran all of Sydney; grandchildren, Natasha (Chris), Laura Lee (Joe), Lindsay (Travis), Alicia (Miles), Daniel and Andrew; great-grandchild Brooklyn; sisters, Annie (Lefty) Vajionais, Orleans Ont., Viola (Edmond) Evong, Sydney, and several nieces and nephews.
Clarence was predeceased by his brothers, John, Neil, James, George and Roy, sisters, Mary, Norah Mah, Sadie Morgan and Florence, also by special sister Nellie (John) MacKinnon.
At his request, cremation has taken place. Visitation at Sydney Memorial Chapel Tuesday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service to be held in the chapel on Wednesday, 11 a.m. with Rev. James Oliver officiating. A reception will follow with interment to take place at a later date.
Memorials may be made to the VON or Palliative Care.
We the family would like to thank Dr. Buhariwalla, the Von and Palliative Care staff for all they have done for Clarence, it was greatly appreciated.
