MacAskill, William John “Bill”. Age 71 of Brooklyn, Hants County. It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of a loving husband, father , brother, grandfather, friend and to so many, their “Poppy”, passed away peacefully at home, with his devoted wife Pam, by his side, November 27t,2014. Born April 10, 1943, he was the eldest of five children and as so, found himself working on heavy machinery in the family business a very young age. He drove truck and operated heavy machinery for many years, with Trainer GMC, Irving Oil, Brooklyn DOT, before trying his hands at carpentry with KDP. It wasn’t long before he realized his passion for wood working and began Newport Cabinet Company in 1984, which he was most proud of. He was very much thought of, as a jack-of-all-trades and master of many. A perfectionist with anything he tackled, with true craftsmanship results. He most enjoyed being able to help neighbours, friends, and children - a trusted source for information, to fix things, or lend a hand that made a difference. A workaholic by nature, he always found time to spend with his children, passing his skills and knowledge of so many things to them and encouraging their creative pursuits. He played darts at Newport Corner Mess where he made many friends over the years and the good times left lasting memories that he cherished. He will be greatly missed by his children: daughter, Shelley, Brooklyn; sons, Donnie MacAskill, Windsor; Kenney and Tara MacAskill,Garlands Crossing; Kevin and Tina (Swinamer) MacAskill, Dartmouth; brother, Wayne MacAskill, Cheverie; sister, Joan and Eric Hayden , Mount Uniacke; grandchildren, Nick, Colby, Emma, Daniel, Troy, Sarah, Avah and Lila; many nieces and nephews, as well as a long list of extended family. He is predeceased by father, John MacAskill; mother, Margaret Hamilton (Porter-MacAskill); brother, Earl MacAskill and sister, Lois MacAskill. Arrangements were under the care of Lindsay’s Windsor Funeral Home (902-798-2232), 194 Kings Street, Windsor. A Celebration of Life Service was held Sunday, December 7th in the Brooklyn Civic Centre, Hwy 215, Brooklyn, Hants Co., N.S. Rev. Bill Gibson officiating. The family internment will be at a later date in Fairview Cemetery. Family flowers only and donations were requested to be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation, The Canadian Diabetes Association or the charity of choice.
