Theresa Turner, 87, of New Haven, Nova Scotia, passed away suddenly but peacefully on Friday, Dec. 5, 2014 at Buchanan Memorial Hospital, Neil’s Harbour.
Born in St. Margaret’s Village, Victoria County, on Nov. 9, 1927, she was the last surviving daughter of the late Patrick and Mary Evelena (Capstick) LaRusic.
Theresa worked as a school teacher in her early years, as an employee at Government House in Ottawa, and as a bookkeeper for Victoria Co-op Fisheries and Neil’s Harbour Co-op Store.
She was a committed volunteer and worked tirelessly for her community serving on boards of the local dental clinic, home and school, nursing home and hospital. She played an active role in her church serving as lector, Eucharistic minister, teaching religious education and as a member of the cemetery and financial committees.
Theresa is survived by her children, Maureen (Nicky) Grover, Dingwall, N.S.; Karen, Regina, Sask.; Kevin (Marilyn), Kamloops, B.C. and Georgette (Ken), Iona, P.E.I.; brothers, Ignatius (Jill), Montreal, Que. and Joe (Liz) North Vancouver, B.C.; grandchildren, Bethany and Jeffrey Grover, Rachael and Taya Turner, Julie and Ben Van de Wiel, and by many nieces, nephews and godchildren. She is also survived by two people in her life who were very close to her, Ann Marie Morrison and Tony Gillis.
Theresa was predeceased by her husband, George; brothers, Anthony, Timothy, Emery and James, and sisters, Sr. Patrice, CSM, Ann, Rita, Josephine, Mary and Evelyn.
Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of J. M. Jobes Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, Dec. 12, 2014 at 1 p.m. in St. Margaret of Scotland Church, St. Margaret’s Village, N.S., with Fr. Dan MacDonald officiating. Interment will be held in the parish cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Theresa’s memory may be made to St. Margaret of Scotland Cemetery Fund, or to a charity of choice.
