It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of Rose McNeil, age 83, longtime resident of Queen Street, on Saturday, Dec. 13, 2014 at the Northside General Hospital.
Born in Whitney Pier, Rose was the daughter of the late Joseph and Anne (Black) Hawrylak. A former Registered Nurse, mom graduated from St. Joseph Hospital School of Nursing, Glace Bay in 1952. She worked at both St. Rita and Northside General hospitals and Dr. Lloyd MacKenzie’s office. Later she opened and operated her own day care center in North Sydney.
Mom was a devout Catholic with profound faith. She was a faithful member of St. Joseph Church, North Sydney. For many years she was involved in parish ministries such as R.C.I.A (home of hospitality), Eucharistic Minister, funeral reception team and Cursillo.
She is survived by her loving husband, Mike B. McNeil, married for 62 years. Mom cherished her time with her family and leaves many happy memories.
She is survived by her loving children, Debi (Bill) Freeborne, Baddeck; Bruce (Elgin), Dartmouth; Michael, Shenacadie; Elaine (Bill) MacLean, Moncton; Lloyd, North Sydney; David (Shelley), Tantallon and Joanne, North Sydney. She was a loving grandmother to Connor, Daniel, Breton, Sean, Nathan, Anna and David Francis. She is also survived by her sisters, Sr. Margaret and Sr. Elaine Hawrylak, both in Sydney; brothers, Greg (Carol), Johnny (Linda) and Joey (Lee) Hawrylak, Whitney Pier. Also surviving are sisters-in-law, Dolores Marsh, Reserve Mines and Colleen Hawrylak, Sydney and by many nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, mom was predeceased by an infant grand-daughter, Taylor; her sister, Kay Boutilier; brothers, Tony & Mike Hawrylak and infant brother, Robert Bruce; her brothers-in-law, Dave (Gubby) McNeil, Dave Marsh, Reserve Mines and Robert Boutilier, Sydney.
Visitation for Rose will be held 7-9 p.m. on Monday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph Church with Rev. Patrick O’Neill officiating. A reception will follow the funeral liturgy in the church basement.
