It is with great sadness that the family wish to announce the passing of Rita MacGibbon on Jan. 14, 2015 at the Maple Hill Manor, New Waterford.
Rita was born in Iona, Cape Breton, she was the daughter of the late Alex J. and Sara MacNeil.
Rita is survived by her daughters, Nancy (Leo) Quilty and Melinda Eldridge and sons, Ray and Ronnie. She is also survived by her nine grandchildren, Rodney, Sandy, Lois, Terry, Kimberly, Sally, Shelly, Laurie and Jeff; 12 great-grandchildren; sister, Aggie MacDonald of Toronto and brother, Ray (Dolly) MacNeil of Cheticamp, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, George; son, David; daughter, Ruby and son-in-law, Joe Eldridge. She was also predeceased by sisters, Marg, Dena and Monica and brothers, Francis, Mickey, Gerrard, Syl and Bernie.
Rita was loved by all who met her. She was great fun to be around and loved to hear a good joke or to tell one. A good game of cards was one of her pastimes which she enjoyed playing with Nancy and Melinda. When she could get out for the day, she also liked going to the Casino. She will be remembered for her love of Scottish music, dancing, sing-a-longs and playing the harmonica and spoons. Rita mostly enjoyed spending time with her family and especially loved having her grandchildren visit with her.
Mom enjoyed her special friends at the Maple Hill Manor. They were her extended family and we were always at ease knowing she was well looked after by their staff.
Visitation will take place on Friday, Jan. 16, 2015 from 5-8 p.m. A funeral service will be held Saturday, Jan. 17 at 10 a.m. at the Calvin United Church, Hudson Street, with Rev. Duncan Roach officiating. A luncheon will follow at the Reverend Duncan Roach Fellowship Room. Burial will be held at a later date.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of McLellan Brothers Funeral Home, 3183 Plummer Ave., New Waterford, 862-7500. Donations in Rita’s memory can be made to the Maple Hill Manor or the Calvin United Church.
