Joseph Louis Mombourquette (born September 26, 1926) passed away at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital on January 22, 2015 surrounded by his loving family after a lengthy and courageous battle with cancer.
Joe was born in Sydney and raised in the North End by his parents, Amable and Alexina (Poirier) Mombourquette. A good day for Joe included an afternoon on the Bras d’Or Lakes with his grandchildren, black rum, sunshine and sharing a good story – “Nuff sed!” His love for classical music started at an early age and gave him tremendous pleasure throughout his life.
Joe worked in sales for Pepsi in both Toronto and Sydney for many years. Later he derived great satisfaction working with the clients of Horizon Achievement Centre.
Joe is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Jane (Neill), six children, 12 grandchildren and one great granddaughter who affectionately knew their fun-loving grandfather as 'Poppa Joe': John (Georgie) – Amanda and Ryan, Paul (Sharon) – Amanda and Chloe (great granddaughter), Jane (John) – Neill and Jessica, David (Barb) – Nanalee, Alexis, Katelyn, Alize and Meg , Allan, and Peter (Janis) – Abbey and Julia.
Joe’s family wishes to acknowledge the staff of Cape Breton Regional Hospital and thanks them for the compassionate care they afforded him. Much gratitude is extended to Drs. Y. D’Intino, P.Murphy, W. Harless, S.Thanamayooran and numerous E.R. doctors, VON nurses were vitally important to his day to day care throughout his illness. A special thanks is extended to Pau and Sharon for the care given during Joe's illness.
As per his wishes, Joe’s body has been accepted by Dalhousie University Faculty of Medicine to assist doctors in their research.
There will not be any visitation as per his wishes. A celebration of his life will take place at a later date. Joe would be happy to know that blood or financial donations were made in his name to Canadian Blood Services.
