In her 94th year, after a long and fulfilling life, Nellie Steele passed away peacefully at the Saint John Regional Hospital on Jan. 24, 2015.
She was born in St. Ann's, Cape Breton, N.S on March 26, 1920 then moved to Sydney for most of her life. She moved to Saint John in 2010 to live with her daughter, Sharon and son-in-law, Emile.
She was the daughter of the late Catherine Morrison. Nellie worked at the Isle Royal Hotel for 16 years and then the Holiday Inn for 16 years before retiring. Nellie's greatest hobby was dancing and spending time with her great-grandchildren.
Nellie was the last of her family. Nellie was predeceased by her husband, Hubert; daughter, Shirley Anderson and good friend, George MacDonald.
Nellie is survived by two daughters, Sharon (Emile) Mazerolle of Saint John, N.B., Donna (Bob) Greer of Saint John, N.B.; two sons, Rodney Steele of Sydney and David Steele of Saint John. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, seven great-great-grandchildren; six step-grandchildren, 10 step-great-grandchildren, seven step-great-great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will take place at Sydney Memorial Chapel today (Tuesday, Jan. 27th) and Wednesday, Jan. 28th from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. The funeral service will take place Thursday, Jan. 29th in Sydney Memorial Chapel at 2 p.m. with Rev. Rosemary Godin officiating. Following the service, there will be a reception at 27 Brookview St., Sydney.
