It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our dear mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend, Vina Young, on Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2015, at the Northside General Hospital.
Born in Jacques Fontaine, Fortune Bay, N.L.., she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Martha (Miles) Johnson.
Vina lived most of her life in North Sydney before moving to Carefield Manor in Whitney Pier for 10 years and then settling in at Cara House in the Northside Guest Home until her passing.
Vina was a dedicated wife and mother and took great pride in caring for her family. Her hands were always kept busy, whether it was cooking and baking, the endless hours spent sewing clothes for her children, or quilting and crafts. Vina was a member of St. Joseph parish in North Sydney.
She is survived by her five daughters, Sharon (Archie) Forrestall, Mulgrave, N.S., Beverly (Doug) Currie, Dartmouth, Bernice Masters, North Sydney, Marlene (Peter) MacLean, Port Hawkesbury, Charmaine (Victor) Sakalauskas, New Minas; two sons, Greg (Chris) Oshawa, and Grant of Peterborough, Ont.; by her 15 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She is also survived by her sister, Hazel Smith of Nfld. and her brother, Claude (Lena) Johnson of Labrador City, N.L.
Vina was predeceased by her husband, Michael G. Young; her son, Michael James Young; her daughter-in-law, Theresa; an infant granddaughter, Susan Currie; sisters, Ida and Vivian and by two childhood brothers.
Visitation for Vina will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. Monday from St. Joseph Church, with Rev. Patrick O’Neill officiating. Burial will take place in Holy Cross Cemetery at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the N.S. Heart and Stroke Foundation.
