Lieu de naissance : McKay's Corner Glace Bay
Date de naissance : 20 juillet 1947

Lieu de décès : Sydney
Date de décès : 28 janvier 2015

It is with broken hearts and unbearable grief that we announce the passing of our-much loved husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, Leroy John McKinnon. Leroy passed away peacefully, with his loving family by his side, on Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2015, in the Cardiac Care Unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, after a short illness. His loss leaves a hole in our hearts that will never be mended.
Leroy lived in the McKay's Corner area of Glace Bay for his entire life and was the son of the late Jack and Marguerite (Burton) McKinnon. He was a gentleman and a true friend; loved and respected by everyone who ever had the privilege to meet him. He spent most of his career with the Cape Breton Development Corporation, retiring in 2000 after 34 years as Central Warehouse Manager. He was a conscientious boss and was the very definition of honesty and integrity. He applied those same principles to everything he did in life.
Leroy was a gifted natural athlete, who excelled at every sport he played, especially hockey. In his early years he was a star player for the Glace Bay Miners and was scouted by the New York Rangers. He was a dedicated, lifelong fan of the Montreal Canadiens and never missed an opportunity to remind his "Leafs" friends that Montreal has the record for the greatest number of Stanley Cup wins. An avid golfer, Leroy was a member of the Lingan Golf and Country Club and loved nothing better than summer afternoons on the course. He got an early start on his game every year when he and Maureen travelled south for the month of April. He will be sorely missed by all of his hockey and golf buddies.
Leroy is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Maureen (Connors) and their three daughters, Amy (Lucas Kent) and their sons Oliver and Hudson from Victoria Harbour, Ontario; Jill (Mike Gagnon) and their daughters Riley and Piper from Tucson, Arizona; and Kate who lives in Red Deer, Alberta. He is also survived by four sisters; Valerie McKinnon, Sydney River; Correen Stoliar, Glace Bay; Collette Pierce and Sharman Glynn, both of Ottawa. He will be forever missed by Maureen's family; Patsy (John) Bates; Joanne (Jerry) MacDonald; Debbe (Jerry) McCrank: Russ (Nancy) Connors; Rick (JoAnne) Connors and Lisa (Kenny) Hanson as well as his mother-in-law, Rita Connors; numerous nieces nephews and friends.
Besides his parents, Leroy was predeceased by a brother in infancy; brothers-in-law, George 'Butch' Stoliar, Sandy Hickey, Don Pierce and by his stepfather, Bernie Burton.
Visitation will be held Saturday evening, Jan. 31, 2015 from 7-9 p.m., and Sunday, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay.
The funeral mass, officiated by Fr. Leo Boone, will be 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 2, 2015, in St. Anne’s Church, Glace Bay; followed by a reception in the church foyer.
Interment will be in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney, at a later date.
Memorial donations in Leroy’s memory may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
Online condolences to the McKinnon family, are available through our website www.vjmcgillivray.ca.
