Dad graduated from Dalhousie University Law School in May, 1954 and was admitted to the Newfoundland Bar in December of the same year. He was appointed as Queens Counsel in 1971 and inducted as a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers in 1973. He enjoyed a distinguished career as a lawyer before being appointed to the Supreme Court of Newfoundland and Labrador, Appeal Division in 1986 from where he retired in February, 2002. Dad was an eminent counsel. He appeared before the Supreme Court of Canada on several occasions, including acting as Counsel to the Attorney General of Newfoundland in the 1981 constitutional reference to patriate the Constitution of Canada. His reputation as a trial lawyer is legendary among those members of the bar and the judiciary who were fortunate to have had the opportunity of watching him display his advocacy skills. While a demanding task master, he had the respect of all who knew him for his honesty and fairness. Dad was an avid outdoorsman enjoying hunting, skeet shooting and salmon fishing. He built his beloved Terra Nova in 1975 enjoying years of snowmobiling, playing tennis, boating, and many a "sing-song" with friends and family. Dad and Mom spent many happy evenings enjoying a cocktail while watching the sun set over Terra Nova Lake. He will be missed by all.
