Lloyd William Carabin, 82, of Phalens Road Glace Bay, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2015 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Palliative Care unit following a short illness.
Lloyd was born Oct. 30 1932, and was the middle child of two boys and five girls born to Lillian Carabin. Lloyd began working when he was 14 years old delivering groceries in the Caledonia area. When he was old enough, he began work in the mines but was seriously injured in Caledonia in 1955. After a three year recovery he returned to the mining industry for a short time, but went on to work in food sales and distribution for a number of years before turning his skills to carpentry. He became a journeyman carpenter in the mid 1970s and has been a member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Jointers Union of America for 42 years.
Lloyd was a member of St. Mary’s Anglican parish in Glace Bay.
Lloyd was an outdoors man, going on many camping adventures with his family, before moving on to spend summers at the cabin at Schooner Pond and then their trailer on Trout Brook Road. He was an avid fisherman and could be found any time of the year with a fishing pole in his hand, sometimes deep in the woods or just off the pier in Port Morien.
Lloyd was considered by his grand children to be the “Poppy of all Poppys” doting on them whenever he could. There was nothing he wouldn’t try to do for anyone. He enjoyed a good game of cards and spent many evenings playing his favourite games of 13s and cribbage with his friends. He will be greatly missed by his family and all those who knew him.
Lloyd is survived by his wife of 60 years, Betty (Payne); daughter, Linda Best (Terry); son, Lorne; grandchildren, Andrew, Erin (Paul O’Connor), Sara, Abby and Olivia, and great-grandson, Sean; sisters, Vicky Wadden, Elise Magnuson, Helen Nicholson, Pearl Moulaison and brother, Buddy.
He was predeceased by his mother; sister, Joyce Boutilier and daughter-in-law, Debbie Carabin.
Funeral services are under the direction of Patten’s Funeral Home, Glace Bay. There will be no visitation with services at St. Mary’s Church, Marconi Street, Saturday, Feb. 28 at 2 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Palliative Care Unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
