We regret to announce the passing of Helen Louise Smith, on Monday, March 9, 2015, at Harbourstone Enhanced Care, Sydney.
Born in Sydney Mines on March 19, 1917, she was the daughter of the late George and Lydia (Rice) Smith. Helen was active through the years, and a lifetime, loyal member of Clyde Ave. Baptist Church, Sydney Mines
Helen graduated from Acadia University and Dalhousie University. She taught school in the Sydney Mines School District, and retired from the Northside Victoria School District after her teaching profession and librarian career. Throughout her life Helen enjoyed many various sports, but especially enjoyed playing tennis and skating. She enjoyed travelling, and spent many hours gardening.
Helen is survived by sisters-in-law, Kay Smith and Winnifred Smith, nephews Clifford Smith (Marsha), David Smith (Goldie), Wayne Cameron, and Donald Smith (Karen), nieces Beverly Grubb (David) and Debbie Mol (Leonard).
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her brothers, David (Margaret), Hugh and George, sister Virginia (James Cameron) and nieces, Sharon Theriault and Kim MacDonald. Her first and foremost devotion was to her parents, siblings, their children and her church. She will be remembered fondly by cousins and the children of her nieces and nephews.
Special thanks to the care professionals at Fisherman’s Cove, Harbourstone Enhanced Care, her home the last couple of years.
There will be no visitation. A celebration of her life will be held Friday, March 13, 2015, at 2 p.m. in Clyde Avenue Baptist Church with Pastor Charmaine James officiating. A reception will be held in the church hall, following the service. The burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery at a later date.
Family flowers only. Memorial donations may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
