Mary Irene Pettigrew, 68, of New Waterford passed away peacefully in Halifax, March 17, 2015 surrounded by her family.
Born in New Waterford, she was a daughter of the late John 'Red' 'Buddy' Sr. and Gladys (Mason) Fortune.
In younger years, Irene had a love of baseball, especially the local games, which earned her the name 'High Pockets'. Some still referred to her as this which made her very proud. Irene also loved dancing and doing her shake to the song 'Wipeout'.
Irene is survived by sisters, Shirley Starzyczny and Joyce (Charles) Burlock; special uncle, Gail and many nieces and nephews.
Irene also had two children, Mary Helen (Nellie) and Joseph, whom she loved dearly.
Besides her parents John and Gladys, she is predeceased by a sister, Marie, in infancy, brothers John 'Red' Jr. and Louie Fortune.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, March 21, 2015, from 2-3 p.m. with a funeral service to follow at 3 p.m., Fr. Ray Huntley officiating, all in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home Chapel, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. Burial will be held in St. Agnes Cemetery at a later date.
Donations in her memory may be made to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul or a charity of one's choice.
