Kenneth Peters

Kenneth Eugene Peters was born in Schoenfeld, Sask on September 29, 1937 and passed away peacefully at the Palliser Care Centre in Swift Current on May 15, 2015 after a lengthy illness. Ken started school in Chilliwack, BC, followed by Oman, Elmwood and Swift Current Collegiate Institute leaving school mid-grade 12 for a lung operation. Thereafter he cleaned the bar at the Healy Hotel, was a jeweler at Starlite Jewelers and then a picture framer at Engel's Hobby Shop. Throughout his life, Ken captured nature, his family and SC city in pencil sketches, oil paintings, charcoal, oil pastels and photography and maintained a studio with his earnings-always with a camera over his shoulder, a pencil behind his right ear and a paintbrush in his hand. As a founding member of the SC Road Aces Club he reveled in road trips to places such as the Landing, and South Dakota on his Harley. Ken married Sharon Kopperud in 1967 and settled in Cadillac where Sharon taught school. Ken commuted to Swift Current during the week for his job. They moved to Swift Current in 1968 at which time he received grants from the Sask Arts Board to allow him to concentrate on his painting. Following two years of first place recognition, some of his works went on Tour, Ken had the honor of co-artist at the opening of Swift Current's first art gallery at the current Clifton Centre. Ken and Sharon bought their one-time home in 1972 where Ken enjoyed his photo-lab, art studio and a place to apply his carpentry skills, love of wine-making and family gardening. He continued to work for Engel's Hobby shop until his family opened Village Book & Framing. Ken and Sharon adopted Michael and Gwyneth in 1976.Ken loved taking pictures of their photogenic moments. As Sharon taught school and took university classes, Ken took on much on the cooking, house work and some child-care plus maintained his framing. There was always time for family camping at Cypress, trips to Dinosaur Park and spending weekly visits at the grandparents and family. Fishing became his best past-time especially shared with his grandson, Bradley Darren, who became their well-loved chosen child in 1995.Ken and Sharon celebrated three other grandchildren joining the family: Dylan Noel, Sharon Summer Grace and Prairie Starlite. By 2002, Ken's health had deteriorated significantly. After a lengthy stay in the hospital, Ken chose to enter assisted living at the Palliser. He kept himself busy with his computer, endless reading, bonsai and other plant propagation, beading, macramé, music and photography.
