It is with saddened hearts that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend Jerome D. Martell on Monday, June 1, 2015, at St. Martha’s Regional Hospital in Antigonish.
Born in L’Ardoise on Dec. 1, 1936, he was the son of the late Ernest and Marguerite (O’Toole) Martell.
Jerome graduated from the University of New Brunswick and began his career on Dec. 15, 1960, as a ranger in the Woodlands Department of Nova Scotia Pulp Ltd. (now Port Hawkesbury Paper LP). Thirty-two years later, on April 1, 1992, he retired as a wood supply superintendent in order to pursue a hobby in the wood crafting and tole painting industry with his wife Annette. It was through this hobby that they both made many new friends.
Jerome was an avid sports fan and athlete, with a long and successful baseball career. In 1958 he played for the Antigonish Bulldogs who became the Maritime Senior Baseball Champions and he also played on several teams in Richmond County. He concluded his baseball career with the St. Peter’s Royals who beat out Halifax to move on to the nationals in Saskatoon in 1978. When baseball finished golf started. He enjoyed many outings with his group. And of course we can’t forget Jerome’s beloved Boston Bruins. A more die-hard Bruins fan could not be found.
Jerome was also renowned for his bountiful vegetable garden, which when pickling ended, the over abundance was left at the end of the driveway, free for the taking.
Jerome was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Council 14280 and throughout his life served his parish and community on various committees and boards. Most recently he was actively involved in The L’Ardoise Jolly Club.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 55 years, Annette (Mombourquette) Martell; three daughters, Michelle (Ricky) Sampson, Rockdale, Janet Martell (Jay Forysth),Eriksdale, Man., and Anita (Wayne) Collet, Grand River; two sons, David (Sylvia), Whitecourt, Alta., and Kevin (Shawna), Three Island Cove; 13 grandchildren, Jennifer (Matt), Stephen (Tracey), Mitchell, Amanda, Brennan, Jenna (Evan), Renée, Jordan (Leann), Maria, Justin (Michaela),Sarah, Jerrica and Logan ; and three great-grandchildren, Charlotte, Ajhen and Shelby.
Jerome is also survived by sisters, Jean Murdock, Joan (Jim) MacDonald and Carolyn (Lester) Martell; brother Father Michael Martell; and in-laws, Ada Martell, Joan Giles (Bob Gore), Sam and Elaine Mombourquette.
