Following a prolonged illness, Eugene Lionel McIver passed away peacefully in the Prince County Hospital, Summerside, P.E.I., on Saturday, January 31, 2009. Born in Newton, P.E.I., on June 14, 1920, he was a son of the late Peter D. and Margaret (McKenna) McIver. Surviving are his loving wife of 56 years, Theresa (Folland), mother-in-law Bessie Folland; son, John (Kay) McIver, their children Sheila, David and Alexis; daughters, Genevieve (Bob) Gallant, their children Deanna (Grant) Nicholson, their children, Jacob and Ben; Terri (Joe) Gaglardi, and Katie; Helen (Frazer) Smith; Dianne (Louis) Hamill, their children Ryan, Steven and Thomas; Lorna (Austin) Johnston, their children Jill and Susan; Marlene (Bruce) Feddema, their children Trevor, Mary Beth and Rebecca; Margie (Ray) McKenna, their children Jennifer, Katherine and Charlotte; Mary Beth (Danny) Harris, their children Julia and Colin; sister, Ita (Gerald) Smith, Petawawa, Ontario. Besides his parents, Eugene was predeceased by his sisters, Bernadine, Adele, Teresa, Eileen, Genevieve, Faustina; brothers, Justin, William, Cletus, Aden and Joseph. Eugene "Gene" successfully ran the mixed family farm in Newton until his retirement in 1978. After retirement, he continued to work for farmers in the local area. His many dear friends and neighbors, as well as his steadfast faith in God and his church, along with his loving family, sustained him throughout his years. As well as being a dedicated family man, Gene was always there to help a friend or neighbour in need. Visits by family and friends brought him great comfort and joy. Gene will be sadly missed by all who knew him and those whose lives he touched. Visitation will be held Monday, February 2, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in Lawless Funeral Home, Kinkora, P.E.I. A funeral mass will be held Tuesday, February 3, at 10:30 a.m. in St. Malachy's Roman Catholic Church, Kinkora, P.E.I. Father Eric Dunn will officiate with interment in St. Malachy's Cemetery, Kinkora, at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Prince County Hospital Foundation. Please refrain from wearing scents.
