MARTIN, ALVIN
The death of Alvin Lewis Martin, occurred on July 25th, 2015 at the Richmond, BC Hospital with his beloved wife Gwendolyn (Bone) by his side; they had celebrated their 56th Anniversary in April. Alvin was born in Stewarton, NB to Elma (Marks, Martin) Hall and Alexander Martin.
He graduated from Sussex High School in 1953, and joined RCAF that fall. When he graduated from training, he flew for Government Surveys and Services in the North, out of Winnipeg. Alvin accepted work in England, flying for British United Airlines, flying European-India-Africa routes. When the opportunity came to return to Canada, Al and Gwen moved to Richmond and accepted a position with Canadian Pacific-Air, this time flying West and South on the Pacific side of the continent. Al took early retirement at 55, and spent months sailing the Pacific Islands with a fellow retiree, keeping in touch with his wife by ham radio. In recent years, Al and Gwen toured the world by plane and by cruising, Al's passion was his sailboat Ariel II and antique cars.
Al is survived by his wife, sisters Ramona Graves, Lower Millstream and Betty Adair, Penobsquis, half-sister Sandra Keirstead, Sussex Corner, half-brother Fred Martin, Ontario, brother-in-law Robert Bone, Auckland, NZ, Aunt Edith Marks, Sussex and their families, as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Predeceased by parents, step-father Burpee Hall, step-mother Emma Martin, brothers-in-law William Berry, Leslie Graves, Russell Adair and half-brother Ernest Martin.
Remains rested at Richmond Funeral Parlour for cremation. The Army-Navy-Airforce Legion #284 will hold a memorial on August 25th, at Steveston, BC. A family gathering will be held in Penobsquis in October.
