With great sadness we announce the passing of our beloved mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, sister, aunt, colleague and friend, Ethel Catherine Anderson, on Saturday, Aug. 29, 2015, at the Northside General Hospital.
Born in North Sydney, Ethel was the daughter of the late Daniel MacKenzie and Marion (Appleby) MacKenzie. Ethel grew up on Beech Street, North Sydney. After attending local schools she went to Provincial Normal College in Truro. Following graduation Ethel worked for 42 years as a teacher and administrator with the Northside-Victoria District School Board, retiring as vice-principal of Seton Elementary in 1994. She also served as organist and choir director of several Northside churches including the last 37 years at St. Matthew-Wesley United Church, ending her career there in Nov. 2014. Ethel was both a talented educator and musician and she often used her musical gifts with her students in her grade 2 classroom and her teaching gifts with her choirs. She was a very kind and giving person who besides working as a teacher and organist found time to volunteer at local nursing homes and share her gift of music. Ethel was a very ecumenical person, often working with other local churches of all dominations to put on church services and bring different congregations together.
Besides her parents, Ethel was predeceased by her husband of 48 years, Elliott Anderson and her brothers, John (Jackie), Gordon and Chalmers MacKenzie; brother-in-law, Keith Jackson and sister-in-law, Eleanor MacKenzie.
Ethel is survived by her only son, Carl, his wife Debbie (Kelly) and her two precious granddaughters, Kayleigh and Kate. She is also survived by her brothers, George (Mary) MacKenzie and Gilmour (Gladys) MacKenzie, her sister, Mildred Jackson; sister-in-law, Mae MacKenzie and many loving nieces and nephews.
Visitation for Ethel will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today (Monday) in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Matthew-Wesley United, North Sydney with Rev. Nancy Ritchie officiating. Burial will follow at Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney.
Donations in her memory may be made to St. Matthew Wesley United or a charity of choice.
Mom loved life and had a very outgoing personality. She was well-known and well-liked by many on the Northside and beyond. She was a special and unique individual who was very committed to her family, her church, and her community. A very religious woman mom would often quote the book of Psalms saying “This is the day the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it”. Mom lived this proverb by rejoicing in every day she was allotted and sharing as much joy as she could. She will be greatly missed by those who knew her and loved her.
