Helen (Nellie) Smith

Helen (Nellie) Smith

Date de décès : 9 août 2015

It is with sadness that the family of Helen (Nellie) Margaret Smith announce her passing on August 29, 2015, at the Swift Current Care Centre, just 5 days after her 101st birthday. Nellie and her identical twin sister Alice were born in Regina, SK on August 24, 1914 to Margaret and William Lamb. Following the death of their mother when they were 3 years old, they were raised by their grandparents, Helen and James Hood, on the family farm near Floral, SK. Nellie attended Floral School and after completing Grade 8, as was the tradition at that time, went out to work. She eventually attended dressmaking school in Saskatoon, SK where she learned the art of being a seamstress under the study of Madame Gagner. Nellie married Edmond Smith on August 29, 1940 and they resided in Tuxford, SK and Regina, SK before coming to Swift Current, SK where she continued to live until her passing. Nellie and Ed were blessed with two children, Jim in 1943 and Alice in 1952. Nellie was a great supporter of her children's activities, whether it was attending basketball and baseball games or cooking hamburgers in the band booth at Frontier Days, an activity that she loved. Nellie was a dedicated homemaker who loved to cook, sew and care for her family, her friends or someone in need. One of her greatest joys was being able to sew, at age 94, her granddaughter's wedding dress. She loved nature and horses and enjoyed nothing better than a drive in the country to see the prairie landscape. She lived a very simple life, and never asked for much or wanted to put anyone out. Nellie was predeceased by her mother Margaret (1918); husband Edmond (1983); sister Alice (2000); beloved granddaughter Kelli (2009); two special sisters-in-law Bessie Ledingham and Dorothy Smith; as well as numerous aunts, uncles and friends. She leaves behind to remember her with great love, her son Jim of Kelowna, BC; her daughter Alice of Swift Current; her 4 grandchildren Ryan (Laur) Smith and Kristi (Jason) McCarty and their mother, Jan Smith of Kelowna, BC, and Brett (Amber) Downey and Jarrett Downey of Swift Current SK; her 6 great grandchildren Jamison, Finlay, Rowan and Liadan McCarty, Naiomi Smith and Rowan Downey; her nieces Helen (Gerry) Girodat and Dorothy McTurk; her cousins Frank (Renee) Agar, Jim (Peggy) Agar and Helen (Paul) Moronchuk. Nellie had many wonderful friends and she always enjoyed a visit and a cup of coffee with them. In particular, she enjoyed spending the last few months with her friend Ev Plewis at the Care Centre. She was a wonderful person and will be missed by all she knew. The family would like to thank the staff of the Swift Current Care Centre for the special and compassionate care given to Nellie, particularly in her last few days, and to her special friends for their faithful visits. It was much appreciated. The Memorial Service for Nellie was held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 4, 2015 from the Chapel of Warren's Funeral Home with Reverend Annette Taylor officiating. The eulogy was given by Carol (Plewis) Kemp. Donations in Nellie's memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Warren's Funeral Home were entrusted with the arrangements.
