It is with broken hearts and great sadness, we the family, announce the passing of Gordon Melvin MacLean, age 79, beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend on Sept. 5, 2015, surrounded by his loving family at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital in Sydney.
Born in Florence on Oct. 11, 1935, he was the son of the late Norman and Louise (Childs) MacLean.
He was a member of St. Anne’s parish, Alder Point. In his early years he was employed in the Cape Breton Coal Mining Industry before moving on to work in construction and driving trucks.
He grew up in Shore Road, Florence before moving to his wife’s family home in Alder Point in the early 1970s where he remained with his family until his passing.
In his spare time he enjoyed frequent family gatherings and going for drives with his wife listening to his old music and never missing the opportunity to take a drive to his 'old stomping grounds down the Shore'. He also enjoyed hanging around the garage with his sons and had a passion for old and antique cars. When home he could usually be found sitting in 'poppy’s chair' on the front step waving to everyone who passed and having a chat with anybody who would stop or was walking by.
Left to grieve are his loving wife of 60 years, Millie (Thurbide); four daughters, Rose (Raymond) Marsh, Marlene (Dale) MacIntyre, Alta (Shane)Walker and Chickie (Alex) Ivey; seven sons, Melvin (Betty), Gussie (Miriam), Glenn, Kevin (Lisa), Eddie (Carla), Scott (Tracy) and Dwayne (Debbie) and daughter-in-law Carol MacLean. He will also be sadly missed by 24 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild along with many nieces, nephews and friends.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his son, Dale, two brothers, Lloyd and Lorne and one sister, Alta. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
The family would like to thank Dr. Andrew Wawer for his care over the years and to the Doctors and nursing staff at the ICU unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital for professionalism and care over the past few weeks.
In keeping with Gordon’s wishes there will be no visitation as cremation has taken place under the care and direction of J.M. Jobes Funeral Home. A funeral mass will be held at St. Anne’s Parish Church, Alder Point with Fr. Peter McLeod officiating today (Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2015) at 2 p.m. Interment will take place at St. Joseph’s Parish Cemetery, Bras d’Or followed by a reception in Alder Point Community Hall.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Joseph’s Cemetery Fund, Bras d'Or.
