Elizabeth (Hawley) Crosby

Elizabeth (Hawley) Crosby

Date de décès : 21 septembre 2015

Elizabeth Crosby (nee Hawley) passed away peacefully on Sept. 21, 2015 after a brief illness.
Born in 1924, she was the daughter of Patrick and Mary (Giovennetti) Hawley.
She lived most of her life in Glace Bay. She relocated to Dartmouth in 2014, to be closer to family following the death of her beloved husband of 54 years, John 'Jockey' Crosby.
She is survived by her devoted daughter, Hawley Crosby, her dedicated son-in-law Tom Smith, and her darling granddaughter Olivia; her 'other children' Judy Steele (Bruce Towler) and Brady (Janet) Hawley and their daughter Maran; many other nieces and nephews; and her sisters-in-law Shirley (Allen) Hawley and Kay (Bill) Hawley.
She met an angel late in life in the person of Maureen Stiner, who was an invaluable support to her and to Hawley over the last two years.
She was predeceased by her grandson John who died in infancy.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family, predeceased by brothers Vaughn, Bill, Cyril, Peter, Allen and Gerald Hawley, and sisters Mary Hawley and Florence Steele, her best friend.
For many years, Elizabeth operated a hair salon from her home, with a dedicated clientele who came for 'sets' and friendship and news, and a daughter and a niece available for various style experiments, some of which were more successful than others. She had a sharp mind and was an avid and excellent bridge player, valued the friendships she made in that world, and embraced the internet at the age of 85 in order to expand her field of play. On a slightly less competitive level, she enjoyed countless card games with her brothers, her nephew Brady, and eventually her granddaughter. She was always well turned out, a devoted customer of Schwartz of New Waterford.
She met Jockey at a party, and in their younger days they went to lots more together. The home they shared was a welcoming place for the Hawleys and Crosbys of all ages. She loved her neighbourhood and her special neighbours in Glace Bay, the MacKay, Marsh and McGillivray families, but also enjoyed lovely trips to London, Paris and New York with Hawley and Tom and Tom’s family. She considered Calder Steele a better singer than Tony Bennet. In her last days she was still rooting for the Blue Jays.
Cremation has taken place. A funeral mass will be held on Saturday, Oct. 17, 2015 at 10 a.m. at St. Anne’s Church in Glace Bay, with a reception to follow in the church foyer.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a Nova Scotia Food Bank, a favourite charity of Jockey’s.
