It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful death of our sister, aunt, great aunt,and great-great aunt and friend, Benina 'Bonnie' Legato, of Sydney Mines, on Tuesday, Sept. 29, 2015, at home, surrounded by all her loving family.
Born in Sydney Mines, on Sept. 1, 1926, she was the daughter of the late James and Carmella (Carpenter) Legato.
Bonnie’s early working days began at the British, Canadian Coop Society in Sydney Mines, later she moved to Halifax and then to New York, where she made her home for the past 58 years, she was employed with Leather Goods, plastic, hand bags, novelty workers union.
Bonnie lived a simple life filled with a positive attitude and a joyfilled, grateful heart. Bonnie’s gratefulness to the Lord and gentleness made her special to all who knew her. She gave her love to God, her family and friends, and she loved each one of us in her own special way. She was a very holy and spiritual, and turned to the Lord in times of sickness and hardships.
She was a devout Catholic and a member of Holy Trinity Church in New York and attended Holy Family Parish (formerly St. Pius X) every summer until the time of her illness. She believed her strong faith in the Lord and prayer was what gave her strength. She was an angel on Earth, and we all learned so much from her, especially her deep love of the Lord. She was so gentle and kind and taught us to love unconditionally. She had a pure heart of gold and made many sacrifices in life.
She served the New York Police Department, as an auxiliary police officer for more than 40 years as a loyal and dedicated member. As a member she served the community assisting the NYPD as its “eyes and ears. She served at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, and many other events in New York’s Central Park.
She always looked forward to going home to Sydney Mines and Bridgewater to visit her family. She also enjoyed visiting her nephew and his family in Rochester.
Left to mourn are her sister Mary (Legato) Rogers; brother Vincent and sister-in-law (Beanie) Legato. She is also survived by 23 nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her brothers, John, Frank and Joe and her sisters, Antoinette and Josephine, brothers-in-law, John Rogers and Laddie Kiss, sisters-in-law, Jenny (Aubrect), Muriel (Boyd) and Louise (MacDonald).
Special thanks to Fr. James Oliver for coming to visit Bonnie at home while she was sick. Thanks also to Cathy Capstick, Vivian Forrest, and Wanda Dicks for providing overnight respite care, Alicia and Gerry Buffett and Kathy Walker for all their support and knowledge in setting up Home Care Services. Dr. Carol Critchley for her compassionate care, Northside Homemakers, the Red Cross, Home Oxygen, EHS, Cape Breton Regional Police, and the VON.
Visitation for Benina will be held in the J.M. Jobes Funeral Home, 635 Main St., Sydney Mines, on Friday, Oct. 2, 2015, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial will take place on Saturday, at 10 a.m. in Holy Family Church, Sydney Mines, with Fr. James Oliver officiating. The burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery. A reception will be held in the Pensioners Hall, Fraser Avenue, Sydney Mines,after the Mass.
