Donald 'Aubrey' 93, MacKinnon of Bedford, died peacefully on Oct. 14, 2015, at Maritime Hills, Ivany Place in Bedford.
Born in Gabarus, Cape Breton on July 15, 1922, he was the son of the late Alexander and Sarah (Matheson) MacKinnon.
Aubrey was a Second World War veteran in the Canadian Army as part of the 66 Tank Transporter Company and served in England, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. After discharge from the service in 1946, he worked for three years on Great Lakes tankers as an oiler. Upon his return to Cape Breton, Aubrey started working for the Department of Fisheries & Oceans in Louisbourg and Sydney and served 35 years before retiring in 1985.
Aubrey and family moved to Bedford in 1990. In his later years, he enjoyed reminiscing with friends at the Royal Canadian Legion Calais Branch 162 in Lower Sackville. He loved fishing, listening to Cape Breton Gaelic and fiddle music, and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren who loved their Papa. Until the very end, his memory for detail was incredible making him a remarkable storyteller.
Aubrey is survived by his wife of 59 years Jean; daughters, Susan (Richard) Cobanli, Waverley and Carol Anne (David) Archer of Dartmouth; grandchildren, Emma, Grace, Donald and Benjamin.
He was predeceased by his brother, Stewart MacKinnon, sisters, Cora Piccione, Edith (Edie) MacIntyre, Annie Florie (in infancy), sister-in law, Irene MacDonald, brothers- in- law, Donald MacIntyre, Nicholas Piccione and Allan MacDonald.
There will be no visitation at Aubrey’s request. A service to celebrate Aubrey’s life will be held at St. John’s United Church in Fall River on Thursday, Oct. 22 at 2 p.m, Rev. Matthew Fillier officiating. A private family interment will take place in Oakridge Memory Gardens at a later date.
