Richard "Dick" Cameron
New Glasgow - George Richard “Dick” Cameron, 90, passed away peacefully at the Palliative Care Unit of the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow, on October 18, 2015.
Born in Maitland, Nova Scotia, he was the eldest son of the late Mildred (Tucker) and George Randall Cameron.
He voluntarily enlisted in the Second World War serving as a lance corporal in the Service Corps from 1943 to 1946 in England, France, Holland, and Germany. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 34.
He was employed as a heavy equipment mechanic by Tide Water Construction and later by Warren Maritimes Limited. Over the years Dick and Ruth enjoyed memberships in the Campers Association travelling in Canada and US. He was also involved in Fifty Five Plus where he loved to play darts and cards. Dick was also very fond of old time dancing and loved to get together with friends and family. Dick was an avid gardener and shared many awards from Communities in Bloom with Ruth over the years. He enjoyed leisure reading and appreciated the service he received from the employees of the Pictou Antigonish Regional Library who made sure he was contacted with the latest books of his interest. Dick loved to watch the birds and always made sure the feeders were full for his winged friends.
Dick was particularly fond of his grandchildren and all their interests and talents and travelled to watch their hockey, baseball, basketball games and dance shows as well as their graduations.
Dick is survived by his wife of 65 years, Ruth Hillier Cameron; sons: Paul (Margaret Anne), Charlo, NB; and Philip (Jean), New Glasgow, NS; grandchildren: Scott, Stephen, Patrick, Glen and Mary; and one great grandson, Levi. Also surviving is one brother, Ron Cameron, Blenheim, ON, and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by sisters: Frances Patton, Thelma Tomlinson, Lillian Weatherby, Jean MacLean; brothers: Frank, James, Norman and two brothers in infancy as well as young son Richard and infant daughter Pamela.
Dick will be resting at R.H. Porter Funeral Home in New Glasgow, with visitation 7-9 pm Tuesday. Funeral service 1 pm Wednesday in the R.H. Porter Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Donna Tourneur officiating.
Interment will be held at the Heatherdale Memorial Gardens in Alma, NS. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Palliative Care Unit of the Aberdeen Hospital.
