We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Mary Catherine 'Cathie' 'Mam' MacKinnon of Big Beach at the age of 92 years. Mam passed away peacefully on Sunday, Oct. 18, 2015, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
Born in Christmas Island on Aug. 8, 1923, she was the daughter of the late Angus Joe and Mary Ann (MacLean) MacKenzie.
She was a lifelong member of St. Barra Parish, Christmas Island. Mam was a past member of the Christmas Island Home and School and past chairperson of the Christmas Island Community Fair, an issuer of marriage licenses for over 50 years and a past member of the CIFD Ladies Auxiliary. She was an assistant postmistress in the Christmas Island Post Office for many years. She was the recipient of the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Medal in 2002, in recognition of her community service.
Mam enjoyed her card and bingo games, her knitting and sewing and most of all, her door was always open to anyone for a good cup of tea and a lunch of homemade goodies.
Mam is survived by her sons, Michael Angus (Evelyn), Norman (Liz MacNeil), both of Big Beach; her daughters, Rhodena (David) MacNeil, Shenacadie and Bernita MacKinnon (Kevin Karnis), Truro; also her sister Annie Young, Groves Point; her eight grandchildren, Kelly, Leanne, Brian, John Pius, Neil Grant, Bernard, Lisa, Grace and nine great-grandchildren, Jamie, Tristan, Clayton, Alec, A.J., Samantha, Olivia, Breagh and Calder. She is also survived by her two sons-in-law John Alex MacNeil, Baddeck and Roddie MacMullin, Sydney; four nephews and two nieces.
Besides her parents she was predeceased by her husband John Neil MacKinnon, her two daughters, Margaret Rose MacNeil and Anne Marie MacMullin, her son Jimmy MacKinnon, two grandsons, Rodney MacMullin and John C. MacKinnon and also a sister Rose in infancy.
Visitation for Mary Catherine will be held from 2-9 p.m. on Wednesday at St. Barra Church, Christmas Island. A funeral mass will be held at 3 p.m. on Thursday at St. Barra Church with Rev. Joe Ambrose MacNeil officiating. Burial will follow in St. Barra Parish Cemetery, Christmas Island.
Funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney.
