It is with heavy hearts, we announce the sudden passing of a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. Florence, age 69, passed away with her loving family by her side on Friday, Oct. 23, 2015, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Glasgow, Scotland, she was the daughter of the late Bernard and Ann (Crawford) Shaw.
Florence was a homemaker by choice and it was a job she truly loved. Nothing was more pleasing or precious to her than her family. She sincerely enjoyed providing and caring for Herbie, her children, and her grandchildren; her family was her life. She enjoyed going on Sunday drives, family shopping trips to Halifax, and watching movies at home. She was also the go to person for her family when they were in need of a dog sitter.
Florence will be sadly missed by her loving husband of 49 years Herbert 'Herbie' Somerton; daughters, Darlene (Darin) White, Cindy Somerton-Krszwda (Greg); son Michael (Cynthia) Somerton; sister Linda Allison (Barry Jackson); brother Andrew Shaw; grandchildren, Courtney Somerton, Taylor White, Morgan Somerton, Breanna Somerton, Hunter Krszwda, and also by Hunter’s dad, Robin Krszwda. Florence is also survived by her extended Somerton family, Gary (Kathy), Jimmy (Theresa), Sheila Gillis and Darlene MacLean, numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Besides her parents, she was also predeceased by brothers in-law, Raymond, Henry, Bobby and Johnny Somerton; and sisters-in-law, Joanie MacIntyre, Linda MacNeil and Sally Christie.
In honoring Ma’s request, cremation has taken place. Visitation will be today, Monday, Oct. 26, 2015, from 2-4 p.m. and a service in the chapel starting at 4 p.m., all in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay, with Rev. Carol Gillard officiating.
Interment will follow in St. Anne’s Cemetery.
Memorial donations in Florence’s memory may be made to the Cape Breton Cancer Care Patient Fund, The Heart and Stroke Foundation, or a charity of one’s choice.
