The family of Muriel Margaret MacGregor RN, announce her passing on Monday, Nov. 16, 2015, at the Northside Community Guest Home.
Born in Sydney Mines on May 5, 1916, she was the daughter of the late Roderick and Eliza (Vickers) MacDonald.
She was a dedicated member of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Muriel graduated from Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Montreal, Quebec, in 1940. She began her nursing career as an office nurse for Dr. J.S. Munro. Muriel then went on to pursue a career as a private duty nurse (early homecare) dealing with special cases, including maternity, during which time she went from hospital to home with mother and baby. She would stay with the families for long as they needed and many of these families became lifelong friends. She worked at the original Harbour View Hospital for the last 10 years of her nursing career. Later, she continued her care for people as a volunteer for Sydney Mines "Heart Beats" and for dogs as a dog lover, rescuing many dogs (Missy, Rusty).
Muriel enjoyed life to the fullest. She was an avid swimmer, had a passion for reading, enjoyed cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and travelling to far off places. She was a member of the Northside Senior Swim Club well into her 90's, a chartered member of the DW Archibald IODE, and St. Andrew's Guild. She always enjoyed attending the luncheons with her retired nursing friends.
Muriel was a strong lady with a huge heart and handled each stage of life graciously. She lived by the words "Onward and Upward to God". Beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend, may you move on in grace with determination and love.
She will be greatly missed by her daughters, Heather (Paul) Hickey and Barbara (John) Chiasson. Also left to mourn are her grandchildren, Caelin (Patrick), Peter (Erin), Bruce (Karen), Emma (Andrew), Peter and Gregor, great-grandchildren (her "rosebuds") Rachel, Willow, Riven, Fern, Bronsen and Brighton.
Besides her parents, Muriel was predeceased by husband Gordon Freeman MacGregor, sisters, Freda (Waye), and Lorraine (Watson), brothers, Carmen, George and Burns and grandson Patrick Alexander Chiasson.
The family extends sincere gratitude to the wonderful staff of the Northside Community Guest Home for their exemplary care and compassion for Muriel and loved ones.
By request, there will be no visitation. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 19, 2015 in St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Main St. Sydney Mines with Rev. Marion Barclay MacKay officiating. A reception will follow the service. A private family burial will be held in Brookside Cemetery, Sydney Mines.
