It is with heavy hearts the family of Thomas Yates announce his passing at the Glace Bay Hospital surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Edwin and Julia (MacDonald) Yates.
Tom was a retired coal miner. He was a former Glace Bay Town councillor, Ward 4, a position of which he was very proud. He was an avid card and bingo player. He loved to go for long drives and take trips with the grandchildren. He also liked to hunt and fish. He was a big fan of Hank Williams and the Chicago Black Hawks.
He will be remembered for his sense of humour and was affectionately known as 'Mr. Man'. Tom will be greatly missed by sons, Arnold (Mildred), Thomas Jr. (Maureen), David (Glenda) and daughters, Donna (Fred) Kennedy, Patricia (John) Odo and Sheila Rideout. He is also survived by 14 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He is also survived by brother Robert, sisters, Cecilia (Cecil) Barrett, Colleen (Joey) Morrison and brother-in-law Bernard Seward.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by wife Leona (MacPherson), son Wayne, a daughter and son in infancy, sister Alice Seward.
By request there will be no visitation as per Tom’s wishes. Cremation has taken place. There will be a private, family funeral service at a later date, with Fr. Norman MacPhee officiating. Interment in St. Anthony’s Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Renal Dialysis Unit or charity of your choice.
Special thanks to the staff of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital ER, Dialysis Unit, Dr. Hewlett, 4C, the Cape Breton Health Care Complex, especially Dr. David Ley for all he did for our Dad over the years.
Your leaving has left an emptiness never to be filled.
