It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother and best friend. Mom passed away peacefully on Thursday, Nov. 19, 2015 in the Palliative Care Unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. She was surrounded and comforted by the love of her family during her final hours.
Daughter of the late John and Frances (Delaney) Oliver, she was born in Glace Bay, on April 29, 1939 and raised in Reserve Mines where she resided until her passing.
A devoted Catholic with strong faith; she was a lifelong member of Saint Joseph’s parish.
Our beautiful mother will be greatly missed by her seven children, Darrin, Aaron (Rhonda), Charlene (Angus) MacNeil, Jerene (Byron Donohue), Johna, Dorrell (Trena) and Felicia. Her 15 grandchildren, Ashton and Angelia, Ryan, Shara and Christopher, Parker, Nathan and Jarret, Erica and Kaitlynn, Justin and Jenessa, Robyn and Luke, Adriana and great-grandchildren, Ali and Ben. Also left to mourn her passing are her sister, Sister Magdalen Oliver; sister-in-law Patsy Mills and the Oliver and Kottick families.
Besides her parents and siblings she was predeceased in 2011 by her devoted husband of 50 years, Joseph (Chickie) Metcalfe.
Mom’s truest joy came from caring for her family and the grandchildren she adored. Daily conversations and visits from her children and grandchildren brought great joy to her life. She had the gift of making ordinary moments special occasions. Everything was better when graced by her loving touch. Ma’s door was always open and welcoming to family and friends alike. She was always willing to lend a patient ear, kind words and genuine caring. Her faith in God guided her life and helped her to cope with her own suffering as she courageously battled cancer. Even through her own suffering she was a pillar of strength supporting those around her through it all.
Mom was a dedicated homemaker providing a loving caring home for her husband and seven children. She loved to sew, making many types of formal gowns, christening outfits and wedding dresses that were greatly admired. She took great pride in her home and spent many hours creating a special décor. She loved to bake and was always ready with trays of homemade squares to share with her family and guests.
The Family would like to extend a special thank you to the caring staff of the Cancer Center, Palliative Care and the VON. The kindness and compassion shown to our mother throughout her battle with cancer provided comfort to us all.
Visitation will be held on Sunday Nov. 22, 2015 from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. The funeral mass, officiated by Fr. Daniel Boudreau, is Monday at 11 a.m. in St. Joseph’s Church, Reserve Mines, followed by Interment in the parish cemetery. A reception will be held in the parish hall, directly below the church.
For those who wish, donations may be made in her memory to the Palliative Care Unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
On line condolences to the family can be expressed at www.vjmcgillivray.ca.
To those I love
The only thing between us,
Whether we are big or small;
Is a tiny little heart beat,
Just a heartbeat- that is all;
So when you’re sad and lonely
And my death seems so unfair,
You will always hear me whisper,
"Touch your heart, you’ll find me there."
