It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Raymond Joseph Bennett, 72, of New Waterford, on Nov. 22, 2015, at home.
Born in Dominion, he was a son of the late Eddy and Edith (Gardiner) Bennett.
Ray was a welder by trade and worked in Port Hawkesbury for a number of years. He was later employed at the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital and then worked as a miner in Lingan colliery. He was a member of the Salvation Army, New Waterford. Ray loved playing guitar and fishing, and in earlier years, enjoyed playing baseball.
Surviving are his wife, Marcella (Gittens); daughters, Bertha (Brad) Baker, New Waterford, Nicole Bennett, Glace Bay; son, Eldon Bennett, New Waterford; brothers, Sonny (Bonnie), Ontario, Robert (Florentine), Charles (Georgina), Gregory, Michael (Bernadette), all of New Waterford, James (Betty), New Victoria; sisters, Joanie Jones, Jeanie Smith, Cheryl (Ronnie) Mackie, all of New Waterford; grandchildren, Nikita Wareham, Tommy Bennett, Raymond Wareham, Eldon Bennett, Dustin Baker, Austyn Hill, Victoria Hill; great-grandchildren, Dean Bennett, Lucas Bennett, Bryson Bennett, Aaliyah Wareham, Hanna Wareham; nieces and nephews; daughter-in-law, Kelly Bennett, Northern Quebec.
Besides his parents, Ray was predeceased by one son, Raymond, granddaughter, Jessica; sister, Barbara Bourgeois and two sisters in infancy.
Cremation has taken place. A visitation will be held Friday, Nov. 27, 2015, from 1 p.m. until the time of the funeral service at 2 p.m. all in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home Chapel, 380 Smith St., New Waterford with Lieutenants Dennis and Mary Maybury officiating. Burial will be in Union Grove Cemetery, Scotchtown, with a luncheon to follow at the Salvation Army Hall, King Street, New Waterford.
Donations in his memory may be made to the Hospice/Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton, the Cancer Patient Care Fund at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, and the Salvation Army, New Waterford.
